First trip to Tokyo!

Since Jøran and I were attending a meeting with Jaxa (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, http://www.jaxa.jp/index_e.html) in Tokyo on monday, we decided to travel to Tokyo already on Sunday and enjoy the famous cherry blossoms at Ueno Park (上野公園) :-)

We took the Shinkansen high speed train from Nagoya to Tokyo which takes only one and a half hour! Shinkansen travels at up to 300 km/h and is a very comfortable train... The girls were excited to go onboard :-) Inger Johanne was our new Super Guide planning were to go and what to see - even though she struggelt a bit with my large Japan guide... Finding Tokyo in that book was not easy.. and the pictures of Geishas way more interesting than the text of course!!

We arrived in Tokyo and were estonished by the size of the city and the amount of people...
But since we all have blond hair it was no problem not to loose the others in the crowd of Japanese :-) Everyone was heading to Ueno Park it seemed... Cherry blossom time is considered to be the most beautiful time of the year in Japan, but the peak time of this period only lasts about one week. On the first weekend of this week it is very popular to go to parcs with a lot of trees and camp under the trees with a group of friends.

In Ueno Park, thousands of japanese had already found a spot under the cherry trees and were having pick-nick in the nice weather. There was music everywhere, people playing instruments and singing, you could buy all sorts of japanese food and ice cream, ... It was a wonderful atmosphere wandering with the crowd through the trees and enjoying the lovely weather! Some people had camped under the trees for some days to make sure they got the perfect spot for this special weekend!

There was another nice temple in Ueno park wich we visited only briefly.

After some really nice houes walking around and enjoying a warm, cherry blossom-spring day we went to our hotel... we were quite exhausted from the crowd and all the walking!

The meeting on monday went well, and monday evening we got back to Nagoya to start a new week :-) I am already looking forward to spend more time in Tokyo and get to see this amazing city!! But I am really glad that we went there for a day to be part of the famous cherry-blossom weekend!
